Everyone knows that Godric Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin became enemies because of the latter’s beliefs concerning the bloodline of prospective students in their new school, but why were the best friends, Helga Hufflepuff and Rowena Ravenclaw, also so strained? Modern Hogwarts only remembers the struggle between Gryffindor and Slytherin, but that was because the protagonists were male: the female House founders kept their quarrels hidden well from their fellows. It was all because of a terrible secret: Ravenclaw, known for just prizing the most talented and intelligent students, was beginning to agree with Slytherin’s own ideas. She never revealed it to anyone other than Hufflepuff, but it was true nonetheless. The relationship between the women almost stretched to breaking point, and Ravenclaw almost left to create a separate school with Slytherin, but she stopped instead, staying with her best friend.
You see, it hasn’t been documented that Ravenclaw and Slytherin were secretly lovers, the former mothering four children because of their unions. Only Hufflepuff and Slytherin knew of the children’s origins, Gryffindor believing that they were from a husband who had to hide himself away, working to help other wizards around the country. The relationship eventually had to end when Slytherin stormed away, furious that anyone could get into the school. Ravenclaw was heartbroken, but forced herself to carry on with the school, wanting the best for her little ones.
Over time, these children grew up, having their own families, carrying on the pure line of Ravenclaw and Slytherin. All of these descendants were only ever in the two of the Houses, the Sorting Hat having trouble to decide where they should be put. Of course, only this pure line knew of their ancestry, their proof being relics of love letters between Slytherin and Ravenclaw.
This is where stories divert. In the nineteenth century, there was only one family that still existed as the direct descendants of Ravenclaw and Slytherin. The story that concludes with Lord Voldemort failing to take over the wizarding world originally began with a terrible fire, and the deaths of this innocent family. In our story, the family survived, making everything entirely different to our own history.
Think of a direct descendant of the two Houses, with centuries to have the magical mix within them perfect itself. With the ambition and Dark magic from Slytherin, as well as the unbeatable intellect from Ravenclaw, a Dark wizard would be unstoppable. Did you know that it was Ravenclaw that agreed to help secretly build the Chamber of Secrets under Hogwarts? Without her ingenuity, Slytherin would never have pulled it off. This descendant also believes in the purity of blood, even more terrible than Lord Voldemort himself.
So, what does this descendant do? The Ravenclaws kept themselves and their beliefs hidden from the outside world, and even Dumbledore gave them false names within the school so they could peacefully get on with their children’s education. After all, how unusual would it be to see this Ravenclaw be Sorted into Slytherin? Tom Riddle, as he was then, became close friends with the Ravenclaws, the family finally divulging their true line to him. Finding this amazing ally was more than Riddle had expected, although there was jealousy that their bloodline was so much purer than his. He was Slytherin’s direct heir, like they were, but their bloodline was perfect, unlike his halfblood state.
This allegiance to each other had the Ravenclaws helping Riddle as best as they could, using him as a frontman for the concocted plans. There, he became Lord Voldemort, but, again, things were changed completely. The Ravenclaws always seemed like a trusted and caring family to the outside world, so no one suspected them when they managed to steal the Prophecy about the Dark Lord’s demise, making sure that he realised his true power, and helped them take over Hogwarts. Even Dumbledore didn’t frighten the man anymore!
Those original Ravenclaws eventually passed on, leaving a single child: the final heir of Ravenclaw and Slytherin. She was ten times more powerful than Voldemort, with charm and intelligence enough to persuade wizards to her cause, instead of the previous Purging that the Dark Lord had originally ordered. This charm was so much more deadly: even some Order of the Phoenix members were convinced by her, the young woman taking over the magical side of Britain fully. It was wonderful for both members of the pair, being able to work together so well, perfectly matched.
In fact, with time, they even fell in love and married, keeping their chosen names. Lord Voldemort became Voldemort Slytherin, whilst Lady Ravenclaw took the first name of her ancestor, Rowena Ravenclaw. They had their children, and named them their own heirs, the purest bloodline that the wizarding world had seen. They are joint heads of Hogwarts, teaching as well as ruling, enjoying their reign. There are Order members trying to fight back, but the couple have become a little complacent, ignoring them. Dark magic is taught in the school, a completely different Hogwarts to anything it had ever been before: the original Slytherin’s dream school. Some loyal halfbloods are allowed to attend the school, and Hogwarts, the safest place to be, has become the base of operations for Voldemort and Rowena.
1997 is a deadly place to be, Death Eaters all over the place, Order Members executed for their ‘treason’. Because of one event two hundred years before, there is now a wizard monarchy. Dare you call for revolution?
